Christian Lemmerz

Christian Lemmerz is a German artist first educated in Carrara, Italy and since at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen where he has stayed. Lemmerz’ primary trade is sculpting, but his works cover graphic art, performances and even scenography and filmmaking. Other than co-founding Værkstedet Værst in 1981, Lemmerz quickly made a name for himself with his aesthetics of perishability, perhaps peaking in 1994 where Lemmerz exhibited rotting pig carcasses at Esbjerg’s Museum of Art. Mortality, also in the shape of sickness and decay, is perhaps the most central theme in Lemmerz’ art although it rarely lacks humour or seriousness.
